Unlike many other shark species, hammerhead sharks tend to be bottom feeders due to their unusually small mouths. Likewise, the ocean floor allows hammerhead sharks to use their uniquely shaped head to pin prey down.

  • Characteristics: This model depicts the hammerhead shark's atypical “cephalofoil” head, which allows them many advantages, such as maneuverability. Individually hand painted and professionally crafted, this figurine makes a great toy, teaching aid, piece of décor, and more!
  • Size and Color: 8 inches long and 2 inches tall, this model is roughly the size of a 16 oz. bottle of water. Hammerhead sharks are predominantly light gray with white stomachs, which allows them to blend into the ocean floor and surface simultaneously.

According to DNA studies, the ancestor of the hammerhead lived during the Miocene epoch. Scientists believe that the original hammerhead shark that lived 20 million years ago had a much larger head, and closely resembled the current winghead shark species.
