Found in a large range of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean, cownose rays are a large species of eagle ray that can grow to be as large as 3 and a half feet long. Although not particularly dangerous, cownose rays can deliver a venom similar to that of a bee sting.
Cownose rays are amongst the most commonly displayed rays at aquariums around the world, and ones that have had their venomous barbs pinched or removed also frequent aquatic touch tanks, making them a very popular exhibit. Despite their prevalence in aquariums and other displays around the world, cownose rays are considered near threatened and their global population is slowly declining.
