As their name suggests, Tree Kangaroos are suited to a life amongst the leaves, unlike their more well-known ground-dwelling Australian relatives. These small marsupials live only in the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, in high elevations up to almost 10,000 feet above sea level.

  • History: Like their larger Australian cousins, Matschie’s Tree Kangaroos are quite good at hopping on the ground. However, they prefer to be up in the trees, and only venture down from the branches in order to feed. Matschie’s Tree Kangaroos are endangered, thanks to clearing of the trees on the Huon Peninsula where they live. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these creatures, including the establishment of the YUS Conservation Area to preserve their habitat.
  • Scientific Name: Dendrolagus matschiei
  • Characteristics: This expertly painted Matschi's tree kangaroo toy figure is full of accurate details, including its distinctive fur “whorl” down its back, its marsupial pouch, and its long tail.
  • Size: This Matschi's tree kangaroo toy figure is just over 3 inches long to the tip of its tail, and just over two inches in height. It’s about the size of a credit card.
